Data Scientist / Software Developer - Larus Technologies

Hello! I'm Jon Menard, a data scientist and software developer at Larus Technologies in Ottawa. My role centers on bridging the company's advanced AI/ML tools with client-facing software applications. Drawing on my full-stack expertise, including database engineering, cloud and DevOps practices, backend and frontend development, and software architecture, I provide strategic guidance on system design, with a strong emphasis on scalability, maintainability, and security. I utilize on my experience from a wide range of projects to guide and enforce development best practices, including Git workflows, project setup, automated linting, performance profiling, and coding standards. By applying lessons learned across different environments, I help ensure that every project is built on a solid foundation—robust, efficient, and future-proof.

Previously, I was the lead software developer at Red Rabbit, where I designed and delivered tailored web solutions using Drupal and Laravel frameworks. From registration systems and e-commerce platforms to data aggregation and analytics portals, I brought projects from concept to market by overseeing the full development lifecycle. I deployed production-ready environments leveraging Docker, DDEV, GitLab CI/CD, Dokku, and Docker Compose, ensuring efficiency and reliability at scale.

I hold a Master of Applied Science in Software Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering, both from Carleton University. My thesis research, sponsored by Ericsson, explored multi-agent reinforcement learning (QTRAN, MADDPG, IQL) to optimize resource allocation in 5G networks, balancing theoretical rigor with applied innovation.

Before joining Red Rabbit, I worked at Statistics Canada, where I gained valuable experience in database management. As a student intern, I supported the database application development team, optimizing SQL queries and preparing data aggregation processes for the 2021 Census.

In addition to my professional work, I have a passion for machine learning and AI. My personal projects include developing AI solutions for games and creating simulations using neural networks and genetic algorithms. I enjoy exploring how these technologies can be applied to solve real-world problems.

Outside of work, I love staying active and engaged with the world around me. I enjoy weightlifting, playing golf, swimming, and skiing. I am always eager to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.

My journey in software engineering began in high school when I wrote my first "Hello World" webpage. The excitement of discovering a new language and solving complex problems has driven me ever since. I am thrilled to continue this journey, leveraging my skills and experiences to create impactful solutions and innovations.

Feel free to explore my portfolio to see some of the projects I've developed and the technologies I enjoy working with.
